Mahakavi M. P. Appan
(1913-2003) was a gifted poet, brilliant essayist and shrewed critic of
Malayalam Literature.He was a conscientious artist who formulated his views
about the nature, function and place of poetry and expetiated on the role of
the poet in human society. He was born on 1913 near Jagathi of Trivandrum district.
His parents ware Madu and Kochappi. His original name was Ponnappan. After
taking his Master’s degree in Mathematics, Appan made option for teaching and
he rose to the position of D.E.O, in his official career, He also worked as an assistant editor of the
Malayalam Encyclopaedia.
He
had his imprint in the literary field for over 70 years. He was also a member
of the Kerala Sahithya Academy from 1957 to 1967. He had published 40-odd
poetry collections,. Some of the famous works include Vellinakshathram
Suvarnodayam, was the first work published in 1913. Udyanasoonam for which he
won the Kerala sahithya Academy award.
He had published 50-odd poetry collections, including Vellinakshathram',
`Suvarnodayam', `Leela Soudham', `Soundaryadhara', `Kilikkonchal',
`Jeevithasayahnathil' and `Udyanasoonam', for which he won the Academy award
