The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India
has launched the Weekly Iron and Folic Acid Supplementation (WIFS) Programme to
reduce the prevalence and severity of nutritional anaemia in adolescent
population (10-19 years).
Weekly
Iron and Folic Acid supplementation programme implemented for the following two
target groups in both rural and urban areas:
A.
Adolescent girls and boys enrolled in government/government aided/municipal
schools
from
6th to 12th classes.
B.
Adolescent Girls who are not in school.
The
WIFS programme will also cover married adolescent girls. Pregnant and lactating
adolescent girls will be given IFA supplements, according to current guidelines
for antenatal and postnatal care through the existing health system of NRHM.
The
weekly iron folic acid supplementation is an
evidence based programmatic response to the prevailing aneamia
situation amongst adolescents girls and boys through supervise ingestion
of IFAs and bi-annual deworming. The programme envisages benefiting all
adolescents girls and boys enroll in all government and government aided
schools including students from class 6-12, besides out of schools girls.
The long term goal of
the programme is to break the inter generational cycle of aneamia and long term
impact on the health of the young people and the short term benefits is of
nutritionally improved human capital.
